Helping Your Child Succeed in School

For children to be successful in school, parents must be actively engaged in their children's learning.  Many studies show that parents' involvement in school is more important to their children's academic success than the parents' level of education or income.  By showing interest in their children's education, parents can spark their children's enthusiasm, showing them that learning, both inside and outside of school, is enjoyable and rewarding.

Parents can help children succeed by participating in school or other learning activities, reading with their children, assisting with homework assignments, and talking with their children's teachers.  As a parent, you have a special interest in your child's education.

perfect attendance

During the month of April, there were 304 Dayton students with no tardies and/or no absences.  The following students were randomly chosen and received a free icecream code from McDonalds - Lizbeth Arreola, Melissa Catacutan, Gabrielle DeLaCruz, Michael Fregillana, Donovan Hall, Carlos Leon, Paulina Lopez, Jazmine Ramirez, Zach Underwood, Sydney Zheng.

Each day all students in a classroom have no tardies and/or no absences, the classroom receives a letter towards the spelling of:  P*E*R*F*E*C*T  A*T*T*E*N*D*A*N*C*E.  When they've spelled this out they receive a popcorn party, announcement is made during Wednesday morning gathering and a certificate is posted in the office hallway.

Congratulations to room 14, Ms. Craig's and room 18, Mrs. Okui's 3rd grade classes for reaching their 3rd PERFECT ATTENDANCE.

Words of Wisdom

Did you know that American President Woodrow Wilson was such a slow learner that he couldn’t read until he was nine years old?  That’s right.  Even though he couldn’t read until he was nine years old, Woodrow Wilson grew up to be President of the United States.

Are you slow at learning something?  Well, don’t give up!  Keep at it!  Remember Woodrow Wilson, and then remember these words.  They come from the famous story “The Tortoise and the Hare.”  Sometimes … Slow and steady wins the race.

Today, if you are having a hard time learning something, put one foot in front of the other, and slowly but surely you’ll figure things out.

With something to think about, make it a great day … or not.  The choice is yours.

Mission Statement

The mission of San Lorenzo Unified School District is to work together with parents and the community to develop critical and creative thinkers who are knowledgeable, responsible, caring participants who contribute to a changing world.

School Vision

All Dayton students are valued and appreciated for their unique talents and backgrounds.  Dayton School challenges our students to become independent thinkers, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners, by providing an interactive and mutually respectful learning environment.  The Dayton staff works toward bettering our understanding of how our behaviors and practices are linked to our expectations of student achievement.  We acknowledge that having conversations about equity and the achievement gap are uncomfortable, yet through these discussions we further build our skills and strategies in teaching all students within our diverse student body.  We understand that moments of discomfort may also be moments for great learning.  We use multiple data sets to create new tools and improve old ones, while continually remaining flexible.  Dayton School remains focused on our students and the community we serve.
